Podcasting

Podcasts seem to be made for social studies. There are so many FREE podcasts out there that help make studying the past relevant to students' lives today. For example, there is an audio podcast on Podcast Pickle features an interview with Holocaust survivor Helen Jonas discussing her experiences with Commander Amon Goeth at the Plaszow Concentration Camp. To find this particular podcast (because I couldn't get a direct link), go to Podcast Pickle and search Holocaust. Choose "Voices on Antisemitism," a podcast series by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Helen's accounts are episode 61 of the series. This, along with other episodes in this series featuring survivors, is a great tool to supplement the study of World War II and the Holocaust in American or Global history courses. The first hand accounts along with images of the camps are more powerful than anything students will read in a textbook. I plan on using this resource the next time I am planning for these units.
